Every website needs backlinks to it's site to help with page rankings in Google. There is talk that backlinks from business directories are being weeded out by Google and not seen as importatnt as the backlinks you could get from another website related to your industry. That said, I belive you have to promote your website in as many ways as you can and the directories are there to help. Some people prefer to search a local business directory for services because they know that the search will be localised to where they live.
At the end of the day we just want as many people to find our websites for the services / products we provide. I am a website designer and there's a lot of competition for the keywords 'website designers'. The best way for your business to be found is to focus your keyword search terms for the area you are located in. For example, I am more likely to be found for the search term 'Frankston website designers' than just the term 'Website designers'.
Even Google is now placing more importance on it's local search returns than the paid Google Adwords. Google's local search returns are called 'Google Places' and you can register your website with Google Places for free - Google it :) Google Places listings are usually displayed with a 'push pin' and a location on a map showing your local area.
In addition to Google Places I still believe the local search directories do play a part in helping your online business to be found and it's worth registering your business with them. So below I have listed a few free business directories for Melbourne and Victoria. Add you business to each one of them and make sure you do a good job in filling out the application forms. Write very good business descriptions and use the keywords you want to be found for in your descriptions. It all helps.
